Conventions worth following

For anything that will be printed and bound, bottom centre is the safest choice: it reads correctly whichever side of the spread the page falls on. Bottom right suits single-sided documents and is what most word processors default to.

Skip the first page when the document has a title page — convention is that a cover is counted but not numbered. If your bundle continues from an earlier section, set the starting number rather than renumbering from one; a reader following a table of contents will thank you.

Court and tribunal bundles often specify exactly where numbers must appear and that they must run continuously across the whole bundle. Check the direction before stamping — renumbering after the fact means redoing it from the originals.

Common questions

Where do the numbers go?

Wherever you choose - bottom left, bottom centre, bottom right or top right - about 10mm in from the edge, which clears the printable margin on virtually all printers.

Can I skip the cover page?

Yes. Tick "skip the first page" and numbering begins on page two, which is the usual convention for a document with a title page.

Can numbering start at something other than 1?

Yes. Set the starting number - useful when the document is one section of a larger bundle and needs to continue from where the previous part ended.

Will the numbers cover my content?

They are drawn in the bottom margin, so on a normal document they sit in white space. On a page whose content runs edge to edge, they will overlap. Check the result.

Can I remove them afterwards?

Not with this tool - the numbers become part of the page once drawn. Keep your original.
