Which tools change your file, and which do not
Worth knowing before you pick one, because it is the difference between a reversible edit and a permanent one.

Always keep your original. The lossy operations cannot be undone by running them backwards — converting an image back to a PDF does not restore the text that rendering destroyed.
What is not here, and why
Everything on this site runs in your browser. That rules out a category of tools other sites offer, and it is worth being straight about which:
- PDF to Word, Excel or PowerPoint. Reconstructing an editable document needs layout analysis that is not practical in a browser tab. Any site offering it is uploading your file to a server.
- OCR. Making a scan searchable needs a recognition engine measured in tens of megabytes. Possible in principle, punishing to download.
- Password protection and unlocking. The library used here does not implement PDF encryption. Removing protection from documents is also not something this site wants to help with.
- Editing text. PDF was designed as a final format; genuine text editing means rebuilding the document.
The trade is deliberate: fewer tools, but your documents never leave your device. For a passport scan or a bank statement that is the better bargain.
